Poseidon
Poseidon was the god of the sea, and the brother of Zeus. He had the power to cause hugely destructive tempests at will. On the other hand, he could calm the sea whenever he wished to. His symbol was the three-pronged trident, with which he could produce earthquakes and raise islands up from the bottom of the sea. Even though Poseidon had a home on Mt. Olympus, he spent most of his time in his sea dwelling.
There is an interesting story about Poseidon and Athena. At one point, he and Athena (Zeus's daughter) were competing to see who could get the love of the Greeks in the area around Acropolis. Whoever created the most useful object would get to have the city named after them. Poseidon created a spring of salt water. Athena then created the very useful olive tree, and the city was named Athens, after her. This is the capital of Greece.
